Palácio Atlântico rises beside Praça de D. João I in Porto, presenting a clear modernist face shaped by post-war renewal. The ARS group designed it with Fernando da Cunha Leão, Mário Cândido de Morais Soares and António Fortunato Cabral. The building began as a bank headquarters before accommodating commercial and cultural activities. Its geometric façade stands above pilotis, creating an open, double-height gallery connected to the square. Natural changes in the ground create separate levels, linking the architecture with the surrounding pedestrian space.

Inside, a large triptych by Jorge Barradas brings painting and Portuguese cultural themes into the modernist setting. One panel shows grape harvesting, while another follows an emigrant travelling towards Brazil. Further figures present Brazil through images of abundance, exploration and trade across the Atlantic. The construction also helped reshape Praça de D. João I into a central civic space. Ramps and paved paths frame the exterior, while the façade remains freely visible from Porto’s public square.
