Convento dos Carmelitas stands in Porto as a former convent complex beside the Igreja do Carmo. Granite façades define the Baroque ensemble. A very narrow house separates the two religious buildings, creating an unusual vertical gap between them. The square includes a fountain with bronze lions.

The convent and its church date from the seventeenth century, while the Carmo Church followed between 1750 and 1768. José de Figueiredo Seixas designed the later church. The Carmelitas façade, built between 1619 and 1628, shows early Baroque influence. Blue-and-white azulejos later covered Carmo’s side façade with religious scenes and eighteenth-century ornamental motifs. Inside, carved gilded woodwork continues the rich Baroque decoration. After religious orders dissolved in the nineteenth century, the building served other purposes, including military barracks.

The surrounding square carried several names before becoming Praça Gomes Teixeira. Its final name honours the mathematician who became the University of Porto’s first rector. The narrow house remains the clearest detail separating these neighbouring religious buildings.
