The Arco de São Sebastião stands in Monsanto, Portugal, among granite slopes and winding streets on a steep hill. People also call this old stone passage the Arco do Espírito Santo. Rough granite blocks meet natural rock, making the masonry appear to grow directly from the hillside. The remains of a former sentry box stand nearby.

The nearby Capela do Espírito Santo gives the passage a second identity, joining a sixteenth-century chapel to village defences. Its small bell tower has Renaissance features. Together, these structures place prayer, movement, and protection beside one another within Monsanto’s fortified layout. The Knights Templar built the castle above the settlement. Afonso Henriques had granted Monsanto to them after conquering the village. Earlier traces include Lusitanian, Roman, Visigoth, and Moorish presence.

Generations of villagers, soldiers, pilgrims, and traders once crossed this route between the upper settlement and lower slopes. Granite boulders still shape nearby walls.
