Schloss Petershagen stands in Petershagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, as an architectural landmark with roots in a medieval water fortress. Bishop Gottfried von Waldeck established that fortress in 1306.

Its original purpose was to protect the lands of the Minden bishops while providing their residence. In the sixteenth century, Jörg Unkair transformed the fortress into a castle in the early Weser Renaissance style.

A two-winged plan, polygonal stair tower, and Weser-facing bastion define its visible structure. Swedish forces occupied the castle during the Thirty Years’ War.

After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Brandenburg-Prussia incorporated the castle into its territory, and it became Minden’s governor seat. Heinrich Hestermann bought and restored the property in 1901.

War, refugee accommodation, hotel use, and cultural programming shaped the complex’s modern history. Concerts, exhibitions, a restaurant, and a museum formed part of its documented uses.

The property serves as a venue for weddings, birthdays, corporate events, and conferences. Its surviving architecture connects Petershagen with the history of the Minden bishops and the Weser region.
