Schloss Freudenhain stands in Passau’s city park on the northern bank of the Danube. Its two-storey early Neoclassical building carries a mansard roof, portico, balcony, and Auersperg coat of arms. A rectangular courtyard of honour lies before the main building, bordered by single-storey service buildings.

Construction under Prince-Bishop Joseph Franz Anton von Auersperg lasted from 1785 to 1792. Johann Georg von Hagenauer designed the summer residence. In 1880, the Order of the English Ladies acquired Freudenhain for teacher training and a girls’ boarding school. St Joseph’s Chapel joined the complex in 1900. Since 1954, the Auersperg-Gymnasium has occupied the palace as a secondary school.

The surrounding park preserves remnants of the original English gardens and once contained the artificial Holländerdörferl village. That small settlement housed important staff beside the prince-bishop’s villa. In 2010, the school became a filming location for the music boarding school in Rock It!
