The Peichterturm is a round tower in Passau’s Innstadt, forming part of the district’s historic defensive walls. The tower rises to about 24 metres above the surrounding streets. Builders created it as a battery tower between 1402 and 1403, designed to accommodate artillery within the fortifications. Later fortifications incorporated the tower into Innstadt’s expanded defensive system. Severinstor stands nearby, linking Peichterturm with another visible remnant of Passau’s medieval and early modern fortifications. The surrounding site recalls Roman Boiotro, a fort that once served as a military base. Restoration shaped the tower’s later history, including a family conversion that created living space inside the former military structure. That conversion included two bathrooms and rooms for three children. Model trains occupied a mezzanine, while Super 8 railway films received sound equipment at the tower’s top. Bavaria recognises the tower as a cultural heritage monument. Together, Peichterturm, Severinstor, old walls, streets, and historic buildings show how Passau’s architecture changed over centuries.
