The Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Brücke spans 201 metres across the Inn in Passau, between the university and Voglau district. It remains a railway bridge on the Wels–Passau line.

Joseph Anton von Maffei built its original wrought-iron lattice truss for the Bavarian Eastern Railway in 1860–1861. The bridge represents Passau’s first railway crossing of the Inn. Its 201-metre reach once marked Bavaria’s widest span, while bank-side piers protected navigation, rafting, and the structure. Four decorative corner towers recalled large Rhine bridges without carrying structural loads.

A five-arch foreland bridge led tracks towards a high tunnel and Passau main station on the left bank. Another segmental arch joined the high bank to the main bridge. The name honours Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and recorded crossings connect the structure with Passau’s railway history. Her visits include crossings in 1862 and 1873.

Wartime destruction in 1945 shaped the surviving structure, which reuses a curved-top steel truss and a 96-metre temporary span. Only one original decorative tower remains today. Noise protection accompanied heavy railway traffic from 2011 to 2014, while heritage protection recognises the bridge’s engineering and architectural history. The protected monument still links Bavaria and Austria.
