Generalsgebäude stands in the outer bailey of Veste Oberhaus, on a rocky outcrop between the Danube and Ilz above Passau. You see a five-storey, tower-like building with a hipped roof, connected to the Riester gate building.

Built in 1597, the structure later received Baroque alterations and became part of the fortress’s changing military and administrative ensemble. Veste Oberhaus began as a protective fortress in 1219, then gained courtyards, bastions, towers, ditches and Vauban-style defences during later expansions. The building now forms part of a youth hostel beside the former castle tavern, while the Oberhausmuseum offers exhibitions, guided tours and educational programmes within the fortress.

Massive stonework and layered alterations preserve the site’s connection to Passau’s military history. Protected as a Bavarian monument, it stands among the commandant’s house, armoury, defensive walls and towers of the outer bailey.
