Tour de Jean-sans-Peur rises in the courtyard of an elementary school in Paris’s 2nd arrondissement. The medieval tower reaches 27 metres. Thick walls and narrow, winding stairways give the structure a fortified appearance, while its original role combined a main staircase with secure residential rooms. Philippe Auguste’s wall once joined the tower, which formed the entrance to the Hôtel de Bourgogne.

Jean sans Peur completed the tower between 1409 and 1411 for the House of Burgundy. The Hôtel de Bourgogne covered about one hectare and had housed the Counts of Artois before the Dukes of Burgundy. Its surviving tower expressed Burgundian power, with lavish chambers, large windows and heated latrines. Inside, a circular staircase occupies nine square metres and climbs 17 metres, while changing exhibitions explore medieval life, Parisian architecture and the tower’s history.
