Pont Neuf crosses the Seine in Paris, linking the Île de la Cité with both riverbanks. Despite its name, it is Paris’s oldest surviving bridge over the Seine. Five arches join the left bank to the island, while seven reach the right bank. Its broad deck has pavements and no houses, leaving views towards the Louvre open. The bridge offers wheelchair accessibility for visitors.

The idea dates from the mid-sixteenth century, but construction began under Henry III’s reign. Workers laid the first stone there in 1578. Henry IV oversaw completion in 1606, nearly three decades after building began. Roman engineering inspired the sequence of short arches, while the wide deck introduced pavements for pedestrians. The design deliberately excluded houses from the span. Germain Pilon created the original mascarons during the Renaissance, and nineteenth-century copies replaced them. An equestrian statue of Henry IV marks the island crossing, after revolution destroyed its predecessor. A major restoration of the bridge finished in 2007. In the eighteenth century, vendors, performers and pickpockets filled the crossing with commerce and social activity. Its stone mascarons depict mythological figures.
