Nicolas Flamel commissioned the house in 1407 after his wife Pernelle died. Flamel himself never lived inside the completed house. Restorations altered the appearance, with substantial changes made before the 1900 World Fair. The façade became a monument historique in 1911. The building combines a private home with the Auberge Nicolas Flamel restaurant, known for historical ambience and culinary offerings. Flamel was primarily a scribe and philanthropist, despite the alchemy legends attached to his name.
