Louis XIII stands on horseback at the centre of Place des Vosges in Paris. Jean-Pierre Cortot created the equestrian sculpture in 1821, following Charles Dupaty’s model from 1816. Place des Vosges has held the work since 1825.

The rider appears as a Roman emperor, wearing a cuirass beneath his cloak and a laurel crown. His sword hangs at his left side, while his right hand holds the reins and his arm extends in a commanding gesture. The horse raises its left foreleg, turns its head right, and has no stirrups.

A tree trunk supports the horse beneath its belly, preventing the sculpture from collapsing. An earlier bronze replaced by this work had been commissioned by Cardinal Richelieu in 1634 to discourage duelling. Pierre II Biard created that first statue, which opened in 1639 before the French Revolution melted it into cannons.
