Auguste Caïn created this work between 1875 and 1882, during the late nineteenth century. The Barbedienne foundry cast it in Paris. Caïn, born in Paris in 1821, became known for realistic animal sculpture and studied under François Rude and Pierre-Jules Mêne. He later took over Mêne’s family foundry. The sculpture stands in the Tuileries, a garden André Le Nôtre designed for the royal family and their city views. The garden once gave the royal family views across Paris. One paw still grips the boar while the lioness remains poised to strike.
