Hôtel Montmien stands in Paris’s fifth arrondissement, a neoclassical building shaped by the city’s changing streetscape. Jean Baptiste Le Boursier completed it in 1787. Its main façade presents an original carriage entrance, whose doors support a balcony through large consoles. At the rear, a triangular pediment faces the former garden.

Built for Nicolas Marie Germain de Montmien, a counsellor and secretary to the king, it replaced an earlier hôtel from 1704. Antoinette Potier de Nouvion owned that earlier residence before her planned marriage to Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre. The boulevard Saint-Germain replaced the original garden in 1855. That change placed the former garden beside one of Paris’s major thoroughfares.

In the early twentieth century, the building housed the Direction des Contributions Directes et du Cadastre de la Seine. An insurance company later acquired it. Renovation work followed between 1995 and 1997, while the façades, roofs, and two west-wing staircases gained historic-monument protection in 1992. The original carriage doors still anchor the street-facing façade.
