The Hôtel de L'Hospital stood on the Place des Victoires in Paris's second arrondissement as a private residence. Built around 1635, it occupied a setting later reshaped by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. In 1685, Hardouin-Mansart redesigned the surrounding square in an omega shape, framing the residence.

Marc-Antoine Acéré commissioned it as a secretary to the king, before François de L'Hospital acquired the property. François de L'Hospital later gave the residence its recorded name. Simon Arnauld de Pomponne bought it in 1673 and ordered renovations under Hardouin-Mansart's supervision. The work followed Pomponne's rise as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Later, Claude-Louis d'Espinchal, Marquis de Massiac and Navy Minister, owned the premises. His grand-nephew Louis-Claude-René de Mordant inherited it in 1770.

The eighteenth century brought several transformations and changing business occupants. During the French Revolution, Club Massiac used the building as headquarters for wealthy colonial slaveholders. The Caisse des Comptes Courants occupied it from 1796 to 1800, and Banque de France later established its first headquarters there. Demolition cleared the site for Rue Étienne-Marcel in 1883, while Henri Blondel designed a Haussmannian replacement between 1884 and 1886. That replacement has been listed as a historical monument since 15 March 1928.
