Hôtel de Castries stands in Paris’s 7th arrondissement as a historic hôtel particulier with a square courtyard. Two wings form a U around it. Its architecture belongs to the transition between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. A garden, a new gate and a high wall with a balustrade shape its approach.

Jean Dufour, seigneur de Nogent, built the property before Jean François de La Croix de Castries acquired it in 1708. The Castries family expanded the garden and rebuilt the residence. Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix de Castries added important interior features during the mid-eighteenth century. The French Revolution transferred the building to the Ministry of War. Later, it housed the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Housing and Cities. Edmond Eugène Philippe Hercule de La Croix de Castries directed restoration between 1843 and 1863. Those changes gave the Parisian residence much of its present appearance.
