Fontaine Médicis stands in the Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris, with a long basin beneath trees. Marie de’ Medici commissioned the fountain around 1630. Its design reflects Italian Mannerism, an influence connected with Marie de’ Medici’s Florentine background and palace project. The Palais des Medicis followed Florentine models. Tommaso Francini probably designed the fountain and grotto, while Paris faced difficult water supplies on the Left Bank. The Arcueil aqueduct eventually supplied the area. After deterioration, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered restoration, and Baron Haussmann’s street planning later moved the fountain about thirty metres. Alphonse de Gisors redesigned its setting. Auguste Ottin’s sculpture group shows the giant Polyphemus discovering the lovers Acis and Galatea beside the basin. Fontaine de Léda stands behind the fountain.

The long tree-shaded basin, grotto, and intricate sculptures mark the fountain’s changing form. The site is recorded as wheelchair accessible. Together, these elements place an Italian-influenced monument within the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. The fountain also carries the name Fontaine Médicis.
