Eaux de Belleville: Regard de la Lanterne stands in the Jardin du Regard-de-la-Lanterne, in Paris’s nineteenth arrondissement. Its cylindrical stone walls support a dome and a lantern.

Built between 1583 and 1613, the structure formed an inspection point along the Belleville aqueduct. That system carried water from Belleville Hill towards Paris, including buildings on the Seine’s right bank. The aqueduct’s underground channels began with monks in the twelfth century and supplied Parisian fountains by the fifteenth century. Inside, a double staircase descends to a basin where hillside water could be accessed.

Historic-monument protection began in 1899 and expanded in 2006 to cover the related Belleville waterworks. The garden preserves a rare meeting of Parisian architecture and early water engineering.
