Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris stands on the Île de la Cité, in Paris’s fourth arrondissement, beside the Seine. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this medieval Catholic cathedral remains a defining work of French Gothic architecture. Rib vaults and flying buttresses lift the structure, creating space for larger windows and soaring ceilings. Its rose windows turn the interior into a pattern of coloured light.

Construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and reached substantial completion around 1260. Napoleon’s coronation took place inside these walls. The French Revolution damaged or destroyed much religious imagery, while Victor Hugo’s novel renewed interest in the building. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led a major nineteenth-century restoration, and the cathedral later became a symbol of liberation during the Second World War.

A fire caused significant damage, followed by restoration that brought the cathedral back into use. The crown of thorns and a sliver of the True Cross are among the relics kept here. Gothic, Baroque and nineteenth-century sculptures share the space with these treasures. Wheelchair accessibility helps visitors with mobility needs experience this landmark.
