Abbaye Sainte-Geneviève de Paris stood on Mount Lucotitius, a prominent height on Paris’s Left Bank. King Clovis I and Queen Clotilde founded the monastery in 502, dedicating it to Saints Peter and Paul.

During the Middle Ages, scholars and students gathered here, while a scriptorium created and copied texts. Saint Geneviève, Paris’s patron saint, was buried in the church, whose relics appeared during danger to the city. Viking raids destroyed many books, but the abbey’s theology school later helped form the University of Paris. Its library became one of Europe’s largest, and seventeenth-century reforms made the monastery the mother house of the Gallican Congrégation de France, governing more than 100 abbeys and priories.

In 1744, Louis XV commissioned a new church designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot. Completed after the French Revolution, that immense building became the Panthéon, while the abbey itself was suppressed and largely demolished. The bell tower, refectory and library survived, with Lycée Henri-IV now occupying the site and the collection held at the nearby Sainte-Geneviève Library.
