Necròpolis de Son Sunyer is an archaeological site in Palma, Mallorca, with eight artificial burial caves carved into sandstone. They belong to Mallorca’s pre-Talayotic period, before the Talayotic culture developed. The former marshland of Prat de Sant Jordi once supported settlements along its shores.

Caves one to five and seven form the main cluster. Caves six and eight stand apart, while most chambers follow elongated plans with corridors, niches, pits, and benches. These carved spaces held collective burials for communities. Their arrangement probably served prominent people or families, rather than functioning as places for mass interment. Excavation in cave seven revealed Bronze Age grave goods and multiple inhumations. Later reuse included the end of the Talayotic culture and the first century before Christ.

Medieval sandstone quarrying removed many roofs, but cave four’s damage exposes the original structure in cross-section. In cave six, a fig tree blocks the original entrance. Its small skylight was designed to hold a covering slab, rather than marking an accidental opening.
