Castell de Bellver stands on a hill in Palma, Spain, above views of the city and the sea. Its Gothic form follows a completely circular plan. Three round towers join the main building, while a high bridge reaches the principal tower, or donjon, across the moat. That unusual plan makes the castle one of Europe’s few circular castles.

Pere Salvà helped design it for King James II of Majorca as a royal residence in the early fourteenth century. Builders used rock from the hill itself. The two-storey palace surrounds a round courtyard, where a central well indicates an underground cistern. Gothic semicircular arches line the gallery around it. Its role later shifted from royal residence to fortress, prison, and museum, including political imprisonment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

After restoration in 1976, it became Palma’s History Museum. The courtyard hosts ceremonies, concerts, and cultural events. Islamic influence appears in the double arches, while prison graffiti remains visible on the walls. A chapel dedicated to Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez dates from 1879 to 1885. The castle offers wheelchair access for visitors.
