In Palermo, Tempio Munito Fortezza Mistica presents a rare rationalist composition shaped by architect Giuseppe Spatrisano. Its symmetrical façade frames an entrance clad in travertine marble. The stone bears the inscription “Tempio Munito Fortezza Mistica,” giving the approach a formal, monumental character.

Spatrisano won the design competition in 1936, and the building opened in 1939. The memorial served war invalids and veterans after the First World War. Inside, a sacred enclosure carries bronze names of decorated soldiers and battle sites on marble columns. Two frescoes by Antonio Giuseppe Santagata flank those bronze inscriptions. Some wings retain original furniture designed by Spatrisano.

In the Saro La Bella assembly hall, Santagata depicts infantrymen beside the Isonzo and legionaries conquering an empire. A bronze cross rises above the Carso stone altar. A votive lamp burns there, leaving the sanctuary with a small, enduring light.
