Chiesa di San Cataldo rises beside La Martorana on Palermo’s Piazza Bellini, with three red domes above a compact rectangular form. Blind arches and a fine cornice pattern its quiet exterior, which shows Arab-Norman architecture shaped by Arab, Byzantine, and Western traditions.

Maio of Bari founded the church around 1154 as a chapel for William the First’s palace, which no longer survives. His assassination in 1160 left the interior unfinished, preserving three naves, reused capitals, pointed arches, and a polychrome marble and porphyry floor. The altar carries a carved cross and symbols of the four evangelists, while later Benedictine ownership, a 1787 post office conversion, and Giuseppe Patricolo’s 1882 restoration mark its changing history. Palermo’s Arab-Norman heritage site includes this church among nine civil and religious buildings.

The three red domes remain its clearest signature, contrasting with the unfinished interior and the colourful floor beneath the reused columns.
