Villa Stenersen stands in Oslo as a modernist house designed by Arne Korsmo for the financier and art collector Rolf Stenersen. Completed in 1939, the reinforced-concrete building combines a white, flat-roofed form with glass bricks, straight lines and curved details. Its purpose shaped every room: a family home also served as a gallery for Stenersen’s collection.

Norwegian functionalism meets practical responses to the cold climate here. Central heating and air conditioning shared space with fireplaces, while Korsmo’s tailored furniture and deep blue, green and pink surfaces gave the interior a distinct character. The circular stairwell, curved entrance and fireplace create a recurring rhythm, and the library preserves the colour now known as Korsmo blue.

After wartime occupation and years as a private residence, the house became a public cultural venue focused on architecture, design and aesthetics. Heritage protection followed in 2008 and 2012, while restoration uses original drawings, photographs and a 2015 colour-archaeology survey. Original furniture remains, alongside reproductions of paintings by Edvard Munch.
