Ullern kirke is a stone Romanesque church in Oslo, built in 1903 for the Ullern congregation. The building follows a near-symmetrical cruciform plan overall. Harald Bødtker designed the church after Georg Andreas Bull’s original drawings were lost in a fire. A square tower rises at the centre of the plan. Windows appear on the tower sides beneath a tall copper roof with green patina. Vaulted ceilings recall Norway’s traditional medieval stone churches. The choir apse holds Eilif Peterssen’s fresco The Ascension. A Byzantine marble baldachin stands above the altar on Italian marble columns. Gabriel Kielland designed stained glass showing Christ and the Evangelists in the north and south arms. Bronze reliefs mark the entrance and interior. Wilhelm Rasmussen’s entrance relief shows Jesus blessing children. Åkerman & Lund built the mechanical organ in 1987. Ullern kirkegård surrounds the church and contains a war memorial grove. The cemetery holds graves of Håkon Christie, Thorbjørn Egner and Nic Schiøll. Both the church and cemetery have protected heritage status. South of the church stand Ullern gravkapell and Ullern menighetshus. The site connects architecture, religious art, memorials and parish life within Oslo’s Ullern district.
