Nr. 21: Gammel kvinne setter opp håret på ung kvinne is a granite statue by Gustav Vigeland in Oslo’s Frogner Park. An older woman carefully arranges a younger woman’s hair. Naturalistic bodies and attentive gestures turn this ordinary act into a scene of care between generations.

The sculpture belongs to the Vigeland installation, an extensive arrangement of more than 200 works in bronze, granite and wrought iron. Gustav Vigeland designed both the figures and the park’s long central axis. Paths lead towards the Monolith plateau, where a seventeen-metre granite column rises above thirty-six surrounding figure groups.

Norwegian granite gives the figures their solid presence. Fine carving records the textures of hair, skin and clothing. Around it, scenes of children, couples and elderly people extend the focus from one quiet gesture to the changing stages of human life.
