Nr. 12: Gutteslagsmål is a statue by Gustav Vigeland in Oslo’s Frogner Park. It stands within the Vigeland installation, a public sculpture setting containing more than 200 works by the same artist. Around you, sculptures in stone and bronze explore human emotions and experiences through Vigeland’s vision.

The installation’s centrepiece is the 17-metre Monolith on the park’s highest point. A circular staircase surrounds it with 36 groups of granite figures, while a low granite balustrade and eight double wrought-iron gates define the area. The Monolith began as a roughly 280-tonne granite block quarried near Halden in the early 1920s. Three stone carvers then spent about 14 years following Vigeland’s models, working inside a wooden shed built around the stone.

The finished column contains 121 intertwined figures reaching upwards. Nearby Tørtberg was once a crofter’s farm under Frogner Manor, before the surrounding sculpture setting became known as the Vigeland installation.
