Litteraturhuset stands in Oslo as a national centre for literature, books, culture, and public activity. Its former teacher’s college contains a café, bookshop, meeting rooms, and writer workspaces. Inside, offices for literary organisations accompany spaces for talks, readings, and debates. Artwork fills several interior spaces, including a large wall drawing.

Opened in 2007, Litteraturhuset transformed Oslo’s former teacher’s college into an independent cultural centre. Fritt Ord established the independent, non-commercial foundation that operates it. Its concept draws on German literature houses and helped inspire similar centres in Norwegian cities and abroad. Reading programmes reach children and young people across Oslo. The house also produces podcasts, videos, and other digital material about writing, creativity, and current issues.

The bookshop offers fiction, poetry, philosophy, and books for readers of every age. Kafe Oslo serves food, while Lesbar provides a place to read without ordering. A small apartment accommodates visiting writers from abroad. Steffen Kverneland’s wall drawing shows caricature portraits of contemporary Norwegian authors.
