Bakkehaugen kirke stands on a hill in Oslo, surrounded by green space and residential buildings on land formerly belonging to Bakkehaugen farm. Its natural-concrete body forms a distinctive triangle, like a Norwegian boathouse. A freestanding bell tower rises beside it, while the entrance faces south and the altar faces north. The southern front receives sunlight and looks across Oslo towards the fjord.

The story began with Ove Bang’s winning competition design in 1938, then Erling Viksjø reworked it after Bang’s death. Construction started in the late 1950s, and consecration followed in 1959. Kai Fjell and Carl Nesjar integrated glasswork, reliefs, and sandblasted concrete into Viksjø’s architecture. River gravel appears in light and dark tones across the walls and ceiling.

Inside, an open space joins choir and nave, with a tent-like altar and a large cross built into the wall. Two bells hang in the tower, both cast by Olsen Nauen in 1959. One honours Martin Luther, while the other honours Hans Nielsen Hauge, preserving two inscriptions within the modern setting. The church won Betongtavlen in 1961 and remains protected by Norway’s cultural heritage authorities.
