Taubenturm rises at the north-western corner of Ochsenfurt’s city wall, beside the Lower Gate and the Main River. The surrounding wall forms an almost rectangular circuit, stretching roughly 500 metres east to west and 400 metres north to south. Its slim, round form connects directly with a fortified bastion. Together, these structures guarded the river approach and controlled access through the city’s strongest gate.

Construction finished in 1397, while several additional floors and the domed roof appeared in 1617. Cannons once stood on different bastion levels, protected by three successive defensive barriers. Beneath the tower, an underground prison held serious criminals, with prisoners lowered through an opening by rope. A tower guard watched over the unusual entrance.

The Lower Gate still shows carved figures and distinctive crossed timber framing. A demolished outer defensive area once stood before it, while a historic open-air smithy remains between the gate and the tower. Nearby, a modern monument honours Ochsenfurt’s brave women. The surviving medieval and early modern structures preserve a guarded corner where defence, craftsmanship and civic display met.
