Schloss Großgründlach stands in Nuremberg, Germany, as a manor built on the foundations of a medieval castle. Its origins reach back to 1326. The earlier castle used precisely cut stone blocks, a technique associated with imperial buildings around 1200. Some original walls exceeded three metres in thickness. The Gründlach family belonged to the Reichsministerialen and gained influence through marriages and alliances. After Margarethe von Gründlach sold the property to Burggraf Friedrich IV of Nuremberg, the castle became a monastery. Conflict left the site in ruins during the Second Margrave War in 1552. Philipp Geuder, a Nuremberg patrician, bought the manor in 1572 and began its restoration, linking later history with earlier fabric. The baroque building took shape in the early eighteenth century. Its two-storey, four-winged plan surrounds a courtyard, while a richly stuccoed theatre hall, added around 1720, marks the interior. The Pfinzing family later gave way to the Haller family. World War II damaged the manor, and restoration preserved its baroque structure and original outer walls. Schloss Großgründlach remains an architectural record of medieval foundations, monastic change, war, and successive ownership in the Nuremberg area.
