Villa Furtado-Heine stands in Nice, France, along Rue de France, with its north-facing façade set behind the garden. Built between 1784 and 1787, the late eighteenth-century mansion opens southwards towards its grounds. When Lady Penelope Rivers commissioned it, the estate stretched from Rue de France to the beach. The Promenade des Anglais did not exist until after 1822.

The original 11,000-square-metre grounds held orange trees, stables, a hayloft, and a well operated by a noria. Two seaside rows of cypress trees shielded the orange groves from salty air. Later divisions reduced the property to about 3,682 square metres by 2019, while the garden retained its central design. A curving path from the gate divides around a rounded flowerbed, an old basin, and newer canals with water features. Cécile Furtado-Heine gave the property to the French state for officers returning from the Madagascar expedition.

The villa and gardens became a protected national monument on 10 June 1961. Pauline Bonaparte also lived here, adding an imperial connection to the mansion’s military history. French state ownership links the site with the Ministry of Defense and an officers’ school. From the Promenade des Anglais, the curved paths and central water feature create a clear view of symmetry.
