Villa de Châteauneuf stands on Gairaut hill in Nice as a historic example of aristocratic architecture. Its origins date to 1661, when the Peyre family held the title Marquis de Châteauneuf. The house belongs to Nice’s tradition of country residences, built by wealthy families near the city from the sixteenth century onwards. Its design follows the Genoese villa style. A ground-floor portico supports a terrace reached from the first-floor rooms, creating a clear connection between interior and exterior spaces. Above it, a triangular pediment displays three rows of Genoese tiles, known locally as génoise. The estate later gained a walled garden, a chapel, stables, and further decorative work during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Painted decoration and stucco remain part of the villa’s recorded character. Its symmetry, terraces, and tiled pediment reflect the architectural language adopted by Nice’s local nobility. The Villa de Châteauneuf also preserves the memory of the Peyre family’s social position. It became a classified historical monument on 24 October 1994. That protection recognises the house, its architectural details, and its place in Nice’s heritage. The villa connects the city’s aristocratic history with the development of its surrounding hills.
