Regina stands on Cimiez Hill in Nice, where a grand former hotel overlooks a quieter residential part of the city. An elaborate façade preserves the ambition of its Belle Époque beginnings. It was built at the end of the nineteenth century to receive Queen Victoria and her entire entourage. Today, apartments occupy the former hotel rooms throughout the building.

Henri Matisse lived and worked here from the late 1930s, drawn to the light, space, and calm around Cimiez. His studio supported monumental cut-outs and designs for the Chapelle de Vence. Photographs show works including Danseuse Créole, L’Escargot, and Souvenir d’Océanie inside that working space. His return after wartime absence connects the building with Nice’s modern-art history.

Original architectural details still frame a place where royal tourism, artistic work, and everyday residential life meet. Nearby, the Musée Matisse and Roman arena ruins add other layers to Cimiez. The former hotel therefore holds both the memory of Queen Victoria’s visits and Matisse’s later artistic life.
