The Chapelle Orthodoxe Russe de Saint-Nicolas is a Russian Orthodox cemetery chapel on Caucade hill in Nice. Its cemetery surrounds the building with gravestones and mausoleums. The Russian community established the chapel between 1867 and 1868, dedicating it to Saint Nicholas of Myra. It also commemorates Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov, the Tsarevich who died in Nice. Its neoclassical design uses a southern gable, a triangular pediment, paired columns, rectangular windows, and eastern and western pilasters. A northern annex completes the chapel’s exterior form. Inside, icons and an iconostasis mark the Orthodox religious setting and separate the nave from the sanctuary. The iconostasis carries icons between the nave and sanctuary. A restoration in 2018 addressed the chapel’s structure and interior, preserving details within the cemetery setting. The site reflects Nice’s historic Russian community. Its later ownership disputes involved ACOR-Nice and the Russian Federation, adding legal history to the chapel’s religious and architectural record. A Nice court rejected Russia’s claim in 2021.
