Lichtstele in Neu-Ulm is a sculpture by German artist Ben Muthofer, rooted in constructive-concrete art and geometric form. Its white steel surfaces catch light.

Muthofer cuts and folds thin steel sheets, using symmetry and triangular forms to build complex sculptural structures. Cold white LED light illuminates Lichtstele.

The sculpture brings lines, surfaces, light, and shadow into a changing visual relationship. Geometry guides the work.

From different angles, diagonal lines and balanced forms alter how you read the sculpture’s volume and movement. Its white surface acts as a non-colour, directing attention towards the contrast between illumination and shadow.

Lichtstele connects flat steel with spatial form. Muthofer’s approach reflects constructivist ideas and explores how light shapes your perception of space and structure.

His artistic training included a craftsman’s apprenticeship and studies in Bielefeld and Munich. He also worked in the United States.

Muthofer later collaborated with Alexander Calder in the United States. His folded steel forms recall origami, transforming thin sheets into volume.

The sculpture represents Muthofer’s interest in light as an active element within constructed form. Lichtstele makes geometry visible.
