In Neu-Ulm, Emanuel Rosenthal is commemorated at his last residence by a Stolperstein set into the pavement. The small plaque is made from brass and sits level with the pavement. Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1901, he later moved here with his wife Emilie and daughter Eva. In 1939, he fled to England to escape persecution under the Nazi regime.

His escape did not end the wartime hardships, because he was interned on the Isle of Man. The stone keeps his memory at street level. Artist Gunter Demnig began the Stolpersteine project in the 1990s, placing brass plaques at victims’ last chosen residences. Each plaque carries a name, birth year, and fate. Across Europe, these memorials bring the history of Nazi persecution into the everyday paths of the communities where people once lived.
