Umschreibung rises in the courtyard of the KPMG building in Munich as a stainless-steel sculpture by Olafur Eliasson. Installed in 2004, it reaches more than thirty feet above the ground, where two spiral staircases form a double helix.

The intertwined structure closes into a continuous loop, suggesting movement without a destination. You cannot climb the stairs, but walking around the sculpture reveals changing perspectives on its curved geometry. Precise engineering lets the whole form balance on a single point, while slight differences in step height follow the design’s curvature.

From below, the double helix recalls strands of DNA and turns an architectural shape into an image of endless motion.
