St. Matthias stands in Munich’s Fürstenried district, Germany, as a Catholic parish church designed by Alexander von Branca. The church presents a clear modernist architectural design.

Completed in 1965, the protected historic monument forms part of a brownish-brick complex with a parish centre, rectory and community house. A reddish-brick courtyard forms the complex’s central heart.

A campanile frames its entrance, while the windowless square church rises around a prominent rotunda. The rotunda rises fourteen metres above the square church.

Skylights and a narrow strip beneath the flat roof illuminate the darker perimeter and brighter central worship space. Thirty-two round pillars support the church’s central rotunda.

The central altar faces seating on three sides, with a baptismal chapel and weekday chapel occupying opposite corners. Reddish afzelia wood shapes the ceiling, confessionals and pews.

Roland Friederichsen’s bronze cross fills the niche opposite the entrance. Johannes Kreuz created the altar and font, while Blasius Gerg made the tabernacle and candlesticks.

Joseph Michael Neustifter’s bronze Stations of the Cross line the walls. The Walcker organ and bronze bells complete the recorded ensemble.

St. Matthias is listed as wheelchair accessible.
