St. Johannes stands on Preysingplatz in Munich’s Haidhausen district as a brick neo-Romanesque church. Its rounded arches give the building a Roman architectural character. Albert Schmidt designed the church, which rose on a former gravel pit with concrete-filled iron pipes reinforcing its foundation. The church was consecrated in the year 1916. Blue stained-glass windows fill the interior with Passion scenes created by Heiner Schumann during the 1960s. The windows use several shades of blue. Renovations in the early 1980s added community spaces and modernised the facilities, giving St. Johannes the nickname “God’s Living Room in Haidhausen.” Wheelchair access forms part of the recorded facilities at St. Johannes. A Steinmeyer organ anchors the musical life, while bells recast in the 1960s are tuned to E major. St. Johannes first served a small Protestant community as Munich expanded through late nineteenth-century industrialisation. The church remains part of Haidhausen’s cultural and social life. The building’s robust brick walls and rounded arches define its neo-Romanesque form.
