Sankt Johann Nepomuk, also called the Asam Church, stands in central Munich as a Baroque architectural landmark. It carries the names of Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam. The brothers built this church between 1733 and 1746 as a private chapel for their own vision. Sendlingerstraße frames its slightly convex façade within a row of houses.

Inside, architecture, painting and sculpture combine across a compact space that creates a grand impression. Three distinct vertical sections shape the church interior. The dim lower area represents earthly struggles, while a brighter middle section belongs to the emperor. Hidden light reaches the upper section dedicated to God. Cosmas Damian Asam painted the ceiling fresco depicting the Life of Saint Nepomuk. Four spiral columns frame the high altar, recalling the grandeur associated with Bernini’s columns in Rome. Confessionals carry allegorical scenes across the church interior. The west-facing altar and unusually low-hung crucifix depart from typical Baroque arrangements.
