Obelisk (Luitpoldpark) stands on the Luitpoldterrasse in a thirty-three-hectare green space in northwestern Munich. The terrace places it in Schwabing, within the city's northern parkland. Seventeen metres of height make the monument visible above the surrounding trees.

Built in 1911, the monument commemorates Prince Regent Luitpold's ninetieth birthday. Ninety lime trees represent the years of his life. Twenty-five oak trees symbolise his years of reign around the terrace. Together, these plantings connect the memorial with Luitpold's life and rule. The grounds opened as Nordpark in 1909 before receiving Luitpold's name. After the Second World War, Leopoldhügel rose from rubble left by bombed buildings. Its summit later became a point for viewing Munich and the Alps on clear days.

Nearby, the Bamberger Haus adds a neo-baroque building to the landscape. Its garden restaurant gives the historical setting a second architectural detail. The trees preserve the most distinctive number in the design: ninety lime trees for ninety years of life.
