The Maximilianeum stands in Munich above the Isar, marking the eastern end of Maximilianstrasse. Its location rises above the Maximilian Bridge.

King Maximilian II envisioned the building in 1852 as a foundation supporting gifted students for civil service. Construction began in 1857 under architect Friedrich Bürklein.

Weight problems delayed completion until 1874, while Gottfried Semper reshaped the original Neo-Gothic design into a quasi-Renaissance façade. Arches, columns, mosaics, and bust-filled niches define its exterior.

Until 1918, the building housed a historical gallery and a royal page school. World War II damaged the Maximilianeum, and reconstruction restored its architectural presence.

Since 1949, the building has housed the Bavarian State Parliament, while rear extensions serve parliamentary requirements. Those rear extensions display distinct architectural styles.

The Maximilianeum Foundation, established by King Maximilian II, continues scholarship support for exceptional students.
