The Max-Joseph Monument stands on Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich, under the name Maximilian I. Joseph König von Bayern. It honours Maximilian I Joseph, Bavaria’s first king. Christian Daniel Rauch created this classical bronze sculpture between 1826 and 1835. The king sits on an ornately decorated throne. A coronation mantle covers his shoulders, while his raised right hand makes a blessing gesture. The king’s left hand holds a ceremonial sceptre. Reliefs on the pedestal show science, agriculture, justice and religion within Bavarian life and government. The constitution protects all four depicted realms within the reliefs. Joseph von Fraunhofer and Lorenz Oken appear among figures representing science and nature on the base. The Residenz and Nationaltheater define the surrounding setting. Their proximity places the monument among Munich’s royal and cultural landmarks. The square connects the sculpture with the city’s history. Its throne, sceptre and reliefs present kingship through sculpture and civic themes. The pedestal carries scenes that broaden the monument beyond the seated figure.
