Bennosäule stands in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district as a historic monument to Benno of Meissen, the city’s patron saint. Its red porphyry base rises 11.6 metres, giving you a clear view of the three-metre bronze figure above.

German Bestelmeyer and George Albert Hofer designed the monument, which was erected in 1910 and unveiled on 8 December that year. Benno served as bishop of Meissen, and his relics reached Munich’s Frauenkirche around 1580 after the Reformation. Pope Hadrian VI canonised him in 1523, a decision that drew criticism from Martin Luther and other reformers.
