Bavaria stands in Munich as a monumental bronze statue representing the strength and glory of the Bavarian homeland. The figure rises more than eighteen metres above the Theresienwiese. Ludwig I commissioned the work, which J.B. Stiglmair’s Munich foundry cast between 1844 and 1850 after a design competition. Its colossal bronze construction marked a technological achievement, becoming the first statue of its kind since Classical Antiquity.

The statue forms an ensemble with the Ruhmeshalle and its grand stairway. Leo von Klenze designed the Hall of Fame in Greek and Roman architectural styles. Busts inside honour notable Bavarians from different areas of public and cultural life. Together, the buildings express Ludwig I’s vision of a unified Bavaria celebrating its historical achievements.

Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler gave the figure Germanic features, including a bearskin and an oak wreath. A lion stands beside her as a heraldic symbol of strength and royal heritage. Inside, a circular staircase reaches a platform in her head, overlooking the Theresienwiese and Munich. The head contains bronze salvaged from Turkish cannons, a detail that links immense scale with military history.
