Altes Rathaus, Munich’s Old Town Hall, stands on Marienplatz with a late-Gothic form shaped by Jörg von Halsbach. Its surviving records begin with a mention from 1310.

Between 1470 and 1480, Jörg von Halsbach redesigned the building in the late-Gothic style. Elaborate gables and statues shape its recognizable exterior. The statues represent figures including Ludwig the Bavarian and Henry the Lion.

The façade remains comparatively plain beside the New Town Hall. The Grand Hall preserves Gothic decoration by Erasmus Grasser, including lively Morris dancers. The Gothic tower houses Munich’s historic Toy Museum.

Its collection of historic toys was assembled by artist Ivan Steiger and fills a distinctive place within the building. The town hall served Munich’s municipality until 1874. After severe Second World War damage, restoration included rebuilding the spire between 1971 and 1974. A 1938 speech by Joseph Goebbels also took place here.
