St. Nikolaus stands in Mittenwald, Bavaria, as a Catholic cemetery church surrounded by the town’s cemetery. Its late Gothic form includes a three-bay nave, a two-bay choir, buttresses, and an octagonal tower topped by a double onion dome.

Built in 1447 for raftsmen who moved timber and goods along the Isar, the church later became Mittenwald’s main cemetery church. Burials began here during construction of St. Peter and Paul between 1738 and 1748, and the cemetery moved here in 1836. Inside, a net-vaulted ceiling rises above a high altar from 1672, while paintings and sculptures range from a Madonna made shortly after 1500 to Stations of the Cross from around 1800.

Look for the memorial plaque dedicated to Matthias Klotz, who lived from 1653 to 1743 and is associated with Mittenwald’s violin-making tradition. A floor slab near the altar marks Johann Ludwig Haydorn’s grave, recording his death on 16 August 1703.
