Studio Museo Francesco Messina occupies the deconsecrated Church of San Sisto al Carrobbio in Milan’s ancient Roman area. The church rose in the early seventeenth century on Longobard foundations, commissioned by Federico Borromeo.

During the 1970s, Francesco Messina restored the church and adjoining rectory after years of severe disrepair. Three years of restoration created a two-floor museum in 1974, which Messina used as his studio for life. The collection he donated to Milan includes 80 sculptures and 26 graphic works. Bronze dominates the sculptures, alongside polychrome terracotta, plaster, marble, and wax. Running horses, dancers, and busts of prominent twentieth-century figures bring movement and human presence into the former church.

Lithographs, watercolours, and pencil drawings extend those sculptural themes across paper. Contemporary works and exhibitions continue a dialogue between the permanent collection and the present. The series Impiccati offers a stark graphic denunciation of the horrors of war. Horse bodies, dancers, and historic architecture meet under one roof, linking Messina’s working space with the church’s older layers.
